The first race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve took plaace in the year 1978.Before this the race was held at Mosport park.This name changed to
circuit Gilles Villeneuve after the sudden death of the local hero Gilles Villeneuve who died in 1982 on the final qualifying lap for the Belgian
Grand Prix,after few weeks the race course was renamed in his honour.
In the year 1982 the canadian grand prix saw another accident when villeneuve teammate Didier pironi stalled on the grid.Raul Boesel struck the
stationary vehicle,and Riccardo Palleti then struck the rear of pironi's Ferrari.Pironi came to paletti's aid and try to extract from his car,which
caught fire.In 1987 the race was called off due the sponsorship disputes,during this period the track was modified, and starting line moved to its current position.
The races at this very venue has been surrounded by lots of accidents and controversies. The fianl corner of the circuit Gilles Villeneuve became
famous for crashes.In 1999 Michael Schumacher,Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve all crashed into the same wall.This wall is also know as the "wall of
champions".Michael Schumacher has been the most successful drivers of all times on this circuit, he has won the race seven times.
